What causes sports rehabilitation?

Acute injuries — ankle sprains, muscle strains, ligament tears — happen in a single moment when tissue is loaded beyond its limit, often during deceleration, landing, or a change of direction. Overuse injuries — tendinopathies, stress reactions, recurring 'niggles' — build gradually when training load rises faster than tissue can adapt, classically after a sudden jump in volume or intensity, a return from a break, or a change in surface or equipment. Underneath both categories sit modifiable risk factors: strength imbalances between sides, limited mobility at key joints, landing mechanics that concentrate force, and inadequate recovery. Recovery timeline & prognosis

Timelines depend on tissue: minor muscle strains may need 2–4 weeks, ankle sprains 4–8 weeks, tendinopathies 8–16 weeks of progressive loading, and surgical reconstructions 6–12 months. What we control is the quality of the progression: early protection and load management, then restoring strength and range, then sport-specific power, agility, and finally graded return to training before competition. We benchmark the injured side against the uninjured side with force-plate and dynamometry testing — return-to-play is a measurement decision, not a guess.

1. Pain-guided range of motion

In the first days after most soft-tissue injuries, move the joint gently through its comfortable range several times daily. Early motion outperforms strict immobilization for most sprains and strains — let symptoms set the boundary.

2. Isometric holds for the injured tissue

Push against an immovable resistance in a pain-tolerable position — for example, pressing the foot into a wall for a calf strain — holding 20–30 seconds, 5 repetitions. Isometrics maintain strength and often reduce pain while tissue is still irritable.

3. Single-leg balance

Stand on the injured leg for 30 seconds, progressing to eyes closed or an unstable surface. Restores the joint position sense that injuries disrupt — a key, frequently skipped step in preventing re-injury.
